Shoe trend: get your brogues on

The brogue - this versatile little shoe can take you from the office, to lunch with the girls, to a relaxed date - find out why you should be wearing this comfortable and cute shoe trend...

Brogues (sometimes also called 'Oxford shoes') are generally flat lace-up shoes charaterised by decorative perforation. We're going to be seeing loads of brogues in stores when the winter ranges start to creep in, so best you find out how to wear this shoe trend soon!

What to wear brogues with

Like ballet flats, brogues generally look best with bare legs or at least a little ankle or calf showing, says fashion blogger Brigadeiro. Baring your ankles in brogues keeps the look a little more feminine, and minimises the clown-ish appearance some brogues can have.

Wear them with cropped trousers or jeans, shorts, short skirts and summer dresses.

When autumn sets in, pair your brogues with winter shorts or a skirt and opaque tights in the same shade as your brogues (also good for giving the illusion of longer legs!).

Which brogue?

Go for brogues in classic colours. Black and brown are traditional, but grey will also be great for autumn. To elongate legs, opt for a nude shoe (this works best in warmer weather, without stockings or tights).

Patent brogues also look more feminine, and are great for winter wear as the touch of shine brightens up an outfit in heavier fabrics.

If they're still a bit too mannish for you, look out for brogues in pretty feminine prints - like the floral ones from Ackermans below.
