Winter trend: crazy for paisley!

A classic vintage print, paisley is making a comeback, and although it is a misunderstood trend, it is also one that won’t go unnoticed for its pure unique and timeless statement.

Not as popular on the catwalks as floral or animal print – paisley made a few unforgettable appearances on the 2012 catwalks and is now making its way onto the shelves and racks at retail stores.

Because paisley is a truly vintage print, it is a risky choice which many shy away from, but paired with the right items, paisley can create a unique look that will turn heads.

Think gold jewellery, fedora hats and denim to make the print pop. Paired with the right items and accessories paisley can be modern. Of course, as with all trends, there are ways to wear it. This is how to wear paisley:

pussy bow paisley blouse, Fashion Express

Silk and satin

Blouses in either fabric boasting a paisley print can go from office to high-end restaurant easily, and they mix well with tweed. Opt for floaty blouses with a pussy bow, like this one from Fashion Express (above, R120). Studio W at Woolworths also recently had some lovely paisley blouses.

Paisley skirts

Long skirts and maxi dresses are a must in this print. They can be worn with sandals or heels and chunky knits for cooler weather.

Denim + paisley

Paisley and light denim work well together to create a casual boho look. Pair your favourite jeans with a paisley top and some braids and you’re good to go.

The paisley scarf

Paisley is the perfect print for a scarf – a scarf is a subtle way to translate the trend and can be worn with almost anything you already own.

Don’t mix and match

While the trend is to mix and match prints – paisley isn’t one of those prints. It is a bold print which makes a statement on its own.

Keep accessories minimal

Accessories in gold usually work well with paisley. Choose one type of accessory to wear with your paisley outfit, but make sure it’s a bold one. For example, if you choose to wear bangles, stack them and wear no other jewellery.

Florence Welch is famous for making statements in paisley. Work paisley into your wardrobe and then experiment. It is an old print that doesn’t have to make you look or feel old. For vintage lovers – this is the perfect time to head to vintage stores.
