High Tea at Myatt Café: review
Photo ©: Myatt Café
High Tea is one of my favourite ways to while away an afternoon, and I've added a new favourite spot for this to my list...
You've probably walked past Myatt Café at the V&A Waterfront without realising the delights that await you within.
Stepping into the glass house in the middle of the bustling shopping mall is a little like tumbling down the rabbit hole and finding yourself in Wonderland; except here everyone and everything is friendly and welcoming, and the only thing mad about this afternoon tea is how much there is of it.
Upon arrival I was struck by how intimate and secluded the café feels despite being located incongruously in the middle of the mall. The glass walls and flowers give the feeling of a conservatory - the perfect setting for a dignified high tea. Once you've selected your tea (I opted for "Blooming Show" - I'm a complete sucker for flowering teas), it's time to get down to business and choose how to make up your afternoon tea.
With a selection of finger sandwiches to choose from, followed by several varieties of mini croissant, pastries, scones and preserves, plus macaroons, it's hard to believe this tea is designed for two. That didn't stop my sister and me finishing every last bite though!
Our tea was the first to arrive
My beautiful flowering tea did not disappont: it was served in a glass pot so I could watch as the flower unfurled. The tea itself was delicately scented of jasmine and I got at least two cups out of the pot. Score! A bonus - all tea and coffee is served with a delightful mini macaroon on the side.
Then the towering tiered cake stand
After much deliberation, my sister and I opted for the smoked salmon and the egg mayonnaise sandwiches, followed by a chocolate croissant, almond croissant, chocolate opera cake, banoffee cake, fresh fruit tartlet, and scones and preserves. Lastly, we chose a strawberry and a rose macaroon to top it all of.
Now that sounds like an insane amount of food for two people, but I assure you it's totally doable (although I didn't eat much for dinner that evening!).
Highlights of the high tea

An absolute must-try is the chocolate opera cake, Myatt's signature pastry. My mouth has never been so pampered in my life! A perfect combination of chocolate and coffee flavours, coupled with an indulgent texture...drool.
The banoffee cake was recommended to us by our waiter, and is something I would never have chosen to order myself, but even as someone who detests banana in sweet things, I can vouch for its deliciousness.
Everything else surpassed expectations, including the chocolate croissant which was positively drenched in chocolate and white chocolate sauce. The macaroons, which you don't often find included in the price of an afternoon tea, were delightfully fragrant and chewy, and by themselves would make a fantastic Valentine's Day gift, as they come in the most beautiful boxes.
If you love your high tea, but want to try something a little different to the traditional hotel afternoon tea, do pop in to Myatt the next time you're at the V&A. Afternoon tea is R150/head, but you can go just to enjoy some of their delicious teas (macaroon on the side!) and a mini cake.
You'll find it at Shop 6244, V&A Waterfront. Check out their website here.
