It's time for In Conversation 2009
Joburg’s got four night’s of bookie heaven lined up at this year’s In Conversation at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square.
While Franschhoek is dusting itself off from the Literary Festival just past, and Cape Town gears up for the fabulous annual Cape Town Book Fair, Joburg’s doing things its own way, as usual.
Book lovers are in for a treat as this year’s In Conversation lineup is just as exciting as it’s been the last two years.
Here’s your chance to hear John van de Ruit (Spud); Kevin Bloom and Rian Malan; Antoinette Pienaar; and the incredible, unmatchable, unique Nataniel!
Get to the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square (there's a full bar downstairs) for four nights, five authors and five interviewers!
Each evening kicks off at 19h30 for 20h00 to allow you time to have a good snack before coming to the theatre. Remember, these are early-to-end evenings...
The programme
Wednesday 10th June, in association with Exclusive Books
JOHN VAN DE RUIT does it again as the third Spud hits town: Spud: Learning to Fly, in which our hero has uncomfortable memories of Wombat, discovers a garrulous Malawian in his dorm, and comes face to face with Shakespeare (and SO much more!). He will be In Conversation with Carte Blanche's Bongani Bingwa (ex St John's, actually...).
19h30 for 20h00
We know there will be a run on these tickets so PLEASE book as quickly as you can before we release the tickets to the general public
Thursday 11th June
KEVIN BLOOM's book, Ways of Staying is being raved about all over the country. His book has been likened to Rian Malan's My Traitor's Heart 20 years on. Join us for a very special evening as Kevin Bloom will be In Conversation with both Africa expert Jean-Jacques Cornish and (wait for it!) Rian Malan himself!
19h30 for 20h00
Friday 12th June
ANTOINETTE PIENAAR flies in from the deep Karoo to talk about her decade-long apprenticeship to the renowned Griqua healer, Oom Johannes Willemse, who had been dreaming about transferring his knowledge to a woman in a red bakkie: enter Antoinette! People come from all around the world to learn from her. The Griqua's Apprentice is a book of healing for both the soul and the body. Thousands of copies have been sold in Afrikaans: now the English publication opens another market for this extraordinary woman and her work. Antoinette will be In Conversation with Jenny Crwys-Williams and a range of specially selected Karoo books will also be on sale.
19h30 for 20h00
Saturday 13th June
NATHANIEL: The inimitable and extraordinary entertainer Nathaniel has written When I Was 25, a sort-of early memoir. When you are not weeping with laughter, you will just be weeping... Join us for the last night of In Conversation 2009 as ardent fans Barry Ronge and Jenny Crwys-Williams celebrate the man and his work in an evening which promises dazzling conversation, wit and even some wisdom. We'll have as many of his books on sale as we can lay our hands on!
19h30 for 20h00
People can't get enough of Nathaniel. Again, please book asap before the general public grab the tickets!
