How to save electricity in summer

Electricity usage soars during summer - usually due to hot people trying to stay cool. There are ways, however, to remain cool and save electricity in summer at the same time. Here are some great tips on how to stay cool, and at the same time save electricity during the hot summer months...
1. Keep north-facing blinds and/or curtains closed
The blazing sun, shining directly on single-glazed windows can turn your home into an oven. Closing your blinds and curtains on the sunny side of your house will save electricity in summer and keep your home cooler.
2. Go downstairs
Remember that hot air rises. Logically then, downstairs rooms will be cooler than upstairs rooms.
3. Minimise use of heat-generating electrical appliances
- Dryers - use the clothes line
- Ovens/cookers - eat more fresh, raw, cold food
- Washing machines - full loads only
- Lights - switch off when not in use
- Geysers - turn the thermostat down low or install a timer
Minimising heat and energy from these items will certainly save electricity this summer.
4. Keep cool air in and hot air out
Look around and see where you think cool air might escape. Any door or window that can be closed should be closed. That leaves less space needing cooling down. Exercise outside - movement inside your home creates heat.
5. Have a cold water bath or short showers
Keep a half full bath of water going and plunge into it a number of times a day. You'll save electricity, lessen your carbon footprint, and your wet hair and body will keep you cool for ages. Alternatively, a few short cold showers a day will also help.
6. Keep your aircon on low
If you have to use the air-conditioner, switch it on early in the morning before the heat sets in. It takes less electricity to keep your house cool than it does to cool it down when hot. Just keep the setting on 'low' all day and it will help to save electricity in summer.
Remember that your precious pets also feel the heat. Make sure they have a cool place to lie, and that they always have cool water to drink.
7. Use fans
If you can manage without air-conditioning, a ceiling fan will keep you somewhat comfortable. Even more cost effective, however, is a carbon-friendly hand-held paper fan that uses no electricity at all.
8. Spend time outdoors
Leave the house. Make the most of summer - hike, swim, meet friends. When you do leave the house, however, make quite sure all heat-generating appliances are switched off to save electricity in summer.
9. Open windows at night
If there's a cool breeze blowing at night, open the windows and turn your aircon off.
10. Consider insulating your home
Insulating the ceiling of your home will not only save electricity in summer, but it will help to keep your home warm in winter too.
