A Johannesburg matric pupil who asked South African Olympic gold medallist Chad Le Clos to be her date at her matric dance was completely flabbergasted when he agreed.

Beeld reported that Melanie Olhaus, 17, a pupil at Glenvista High School, went to OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning to welcome home the country's Olympic athletes.

She held up a large poster, which read: "Chad, will you be my matric dance date?"

The swimmer noticed Olhaus, walked over to her and said he would certainly accompany her, provided he had no overseas travel or other commitments.

"I cried when he said yes. I still can't believe it," she told the newspaper.

Melanie had bunked school to go to the airport, but her headmaster Marius Robinson said he would forgive her, just this once.

"Let's just say it was an important and urgent personal appointment," he said.

Olhaus said she had no idea what she and Le Clos would talk about on the night of their date, but she would be happy just to stare at him.

"He's gorgeous and so cute. Nobody else is allowed to dance with him... he's mine for the evening," she said.
